Why Buttonwood?

A long time ago, I engaged in a little practice to honor the arrival of spring. I took a walk, gathered up a few items from nature, and arranged these findings on my bedside table. I journaled about what I hoped for in the coming season. Each morning, that little “altar” was the first thing I’d see, and it would remind me of where I was and where I wanted to go. It made me happy.

I carried this ritual through the summer, the fall, the winter, and round again. It was sweet and simple.

But, life, of course, got “busy.” Adventures gave way to jobs. Solo became duo. Then pets, then babies. Then parents who needed my help (instead of the other way around). Simple rituals dissolved. Life, full and happy as it was, had little time for self-discovery or personal fulfillment.

This year, I felt like changing that. I put out feelers. The world reached back. And here we are.

Buttonwood is a shop, but it isn’t just a shop. No, it’s actually a room-sized version of my little bedside altar, filled with reminders of the constantly shifting arrangement of Earth, Moon and Sun. It’s an attempt to return, more consciously, to the real and wild world, which keeps right on spinning, whether we look up or not.

As the months pass, Buttonwood will change and evolve, always grounded in the current season; inspired not by holidays, but by what is happening outside the door.

I hope that what I gather within its walls will inspire you to bring a little bit of natural magic to your own bedside table, or to that of someone you love.

I believe there are many ways, small and large, that we can rekindle our relationship with nature, ourselves, and each other. Buttonwood stems from my desire to do all three. I know I mustn’t be alone. I’m excited to share this space with you, and to see where the next season takes us.

Cheers to looking up!
